What is the Land Use Bylaw?

It manages development within Lethbridge County by dividing all properties into various land use districts. It also provides standards and regulations on how land and buildings can be used as well as the development permit application process.

The County’s land use regulations help to preserve agricultural lands and environmentally sensitive areas, support economic development, and provide a variety of housing options to residents. The Land Use Bylaw is intended to balance the rights of the individual landowner with the interests of the broader community.

Why does Lethbridge County need to review and update the Land Use Bylaw?

The last major update was done in 2013 when the Land Use Bylaw went through a rigorous review process. Since then, minor amendments have been made as needed to provide clarification or address deficiencies.

A review is being done now to ensure that it is current and meets the goals and objectives of the County’s Strategic Plan. The objectives of the review include:

    • Ensure alignment with the Lethbridge County Municipal Development Plan and provincial acts and regulations
    • Reduce unnecessary regulations
    • Clarify existing standards and regulations
    • Ensure that all the land use districts are relevant
    • Provide a user-friendly document for the public

When will the review be complete?

A draft of the updated Land Use Bylaw is anticipated to be available by mid-November for further review by the public.

    How can I get involved?

A new article will be published each week on this page with topics related to the update. Information will also be available at the Lethbridge Administration office (#100, 905 4 Avenue S.).

You are encouraged to review these articles and provide feedback or ask questions at the bottom of the page. This helps ensure the Land Use Bylaw meets the needs of landowners and the larger community.
